Preparing Your Backing Fabric:
- When piecing your backing, do not leave the selvages in the seams. Seams
should run the width of the quilt.
- Backing fabric should be at least 6" longer than the quilt top. If
the back is pieced and there is a direction to it, the 6" should be spaced
as follows, 1” extra at the top and 5" at the bottom. The
sides should be at least 4" wider than the quilt top (2" on each
side).
- Fold your backing fabric into fourths (fold in half one direction and then
in half the other direction). Square up the piece by cutting raw edges
parallel to folded edges.
- Machine quilting takes up more batting and backing fabric than hand quilting
or domestic sewing machines. The denser the quilting the more backing
fabric is needed. If you have chosen extensive quilting for your top,
please allow more than 6” in the length. It is not always possible
to center the backing exactly.
